Versions
Please
This is the original album version as it appears on the CD and vinyl editions of The Fragile. Flowing directly either from the introduction (CD) or ending (vinyl) of "10 Miles High," it opens immediately with the verse drum loop, synthesized bass, and reversed guitars for eight bars before reducing to the first verse, accompanying Trent Reznor's vocals with only the drum loop and a bass riff. Other synthesizer and guitar layers join in to lead into the pre-chorus, with Reznor accompanying himself as a backing vocalist. The chorus is sung low, almost spoken over a decaying synthesizer note, leading into the second verse and pre-chorus. The final chorus is extended, featuring a reversed string loop. The song stops as suddenly as it began.
Please (Instrumental)
Released exclusively through Apple Music, then later on The Fragile: Deviations 1.
Please (+Appendage)
Exclusive to the cassette version, this version combines "Please" with "+Appendage".
Live
"Please" made its live debut on November 20, 1999. The song was performed several times during Fragility v1.0 and the With Teeth Spring Arena Tour. It was also performed in soundchecks for Performance 2007.
Lyrics
This is how It begins Push it away but it all comes back again All the flesh All the sin There was a time when it used to mean just about everything Just like now Breathe, echoing the sound Time starts slowing down Sink until I drown (Please) I don't ever want to make it stop And it keeps repeating Will you please complete me? Never be enough To fill me up Watch the white Turn to red It fills up the hole but it grows somewhere else instead All my life Yeah yeah yeah yeah, but it just left me dead (Well guess what?) The world is over and I realize it was all in my head Now everything is clear I erase the fear I can disappear (Please) I don't ever want to make it stop You can never leave me Will you please complete me? Never be enough To fill me up
The sixth line of the second verse only appears in the album booklet for The Fragile.
