At first it was thought to be references to dates.
That was quickly denounced when it was discovered that in the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_James_Bible King James Bible], on it's its 24th book, [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremiah Jeremiah], verses were found that offered a more fitting undertone to the overall story.
In the sequence of numbers (24.10.1 for example), the first one denotes the book number, the second denotes the chapter, and the third is the verse. So far every reference, save for one, has been from chapter 10.
