When the song "[[Te Maldigo]]" was cut from the film due to time considerations, director Luca Guadagnino suggested reworking it to be the end credits song. Reznor, however, felt that it didn't fit tonally what the end credits should make the audience feel, and that led to Reznor and Ross composing a new song for the end credits, which became "Vaster Than Empires".
Guadagnino suggested that the lyrics could come from Burroughs' last journal entry. After Reznor recorded temporary vocals for the demo of the song, they tried to figure out who they could get to sing the song that would sound like Caetano Veloso. Finally, they decided that they should just ask Veloso to do it. Guadagnino felt that Veloso's voice was perfect for the song, and that Veloso's history in supporting [[wp:Tropicália|tropicália]] and gay rights was important. An alternate version of the song was engineered by BJ Burton, featuring Alan Sparhawk of Low on vocals, and was released as a digital single on December 13, 2024. [https://bsky.app/profile/treznor.bsky.social/post/3ld7adzqcns2y]
