The song was written when [[Trent Reznor|Trent]] was at "the bottom" of his drug addiction, according to him. As the title suggests, the song creates an atmosphere, lets it dwindle to nothingness, then returns it to its former glory, only to have it fade in a chorus of voices. "Leaving Hope" is also the name under which Trent copywrites his music under.
