About

"Leaving Hope" is the final song of The Fragile era, closing off Still. It is a slow-paced layered instrumental with an extended fade-out at the end.

In December 2005, Trent Reznor granted a gratis license to an advertising agency to use the song in a public service announcement to raise funds to restore and rebuild New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Meaning

The song was written when Trent was at "the bottom" of his drug addiction, according to him. As the title suggests, the song creates an atmosphere, lets it dwindle to nothingness, then returns it to its former glory, only to have it fade in a chorus of voices.
