Kollaps was an industrial band formed in mid-1987 [1] by Exotic Birds members Andy Kubiszewski, Doug Beck, Richard Carpenter and others as a side project and as a way for them to experiment with industrial music that wouldn't fit with the Exotic Birds' musical aesthetic. Trent Reznor, who was also in Exotic Birds, was in Kollaps for a period of time before starting Nine Inch Nails. They often billed themselves as "Cleveland's answer to Skinny Puppy." [2] The band's name comes from the title of experimental group Einstürzende Neubauten's first album. Kollaps only released one three-track demo EP on cassette and 7" vinyl in 1987.
Richard Patrick was also a member of the band, recalling, "I was in this band called Kollaps. And I joined Kollaps in the beginning; it was like this ridiculous thing that...I didn't really understand what we were doing because I wasn't really familiar with industrial. ...And [Trent] saw me again with Kollaps later on...because he was in this band Kollaps with me. And then he left and went off and got a record deal..."[3]
