In an interview with Consequence of Sound[1], Reznor explained how the collaboration came to be:
Rather than the soundtrack being a traditional record of the score, what if it felt like a set at The Boiler Room with an actual DJ putting the music together? I often listen to those things: 45 minutes of a journey where the beat continues pretty much through the whole thing. And we're friends with Boys Noize, and have been looking for something to work with him on.
An article from The Wrap[2] detailed the story and process of creating the [MIXED] version of the score. It states that Reznor and Alexander Ridha (aka Boys Noize) had previously attempted to collaborate on something, and that Reznor reached out to Ridha for Challengers:
He explained to me that they've scored the movie, it's great. But they don't want to release the music as it is. Because it makes more sense in the movie raw, like they have it. But he didn't feel like it's the right way. I think they wanted to try out new things and experiment. They had the idea of making it this this type of continuous mix.
