You Know What You Are? (Clint Mansell Remix)
You Know What You Are? (Beside You In Time)
"You Know What You Are?" is the second track from 2005's With Teeth. Its title strongly resembles "You Know Who You Are."
Contents
Interpretation
The lyrics of the song appear to be commenting on a person's inability to change for the better, evident in lyrics such as "You can dress it all up you can try to pretend/But you can't change anything in the end." and "Don't you fucking know what you are?/Go on get back to where you belong." Many interpretions of this song often overlook the possibility that the "you" to which Trent Reznor refers, may in fact be himself.

You Know What You Are?
This is the original album version. Beginning immediately with Dave Grohl's quick drumming, the song is differentiated as the only studio NIN song featuring prominent double bass technique. Joined by panning noise loops, a distorted guitar riff and echoing synthesizers, Reznor delivers each verse in yells, a delay effect bouncing his voice throughout the mix. The chorus opens up considerably, simplifying the drum rhythm and featuring loud, distorted bass frequencies. The bridge maintains the quick intensity of the verses but builds up using a new bassline and the repeated mantra, "Remember where you came from. Remember what you are." The final chorus is even louder than the first two, culminating in a wah guitar ending that gives way to quiet synthesizer chords accompanying the chorus piano line. The end of the last musical phrase segues into "The Collector."
You Know What You Are? (Clint Mansell Remix)
This is a remix by Clint Mansell created for the soundtrack to the movie adaptation of Doom. It closely resembles the original version, with only some altered vocal effects, new sound effects and altered mix levels differentiating it from the album version.
You Know What You Are? (Beside You In Time)
This version can be seen and heard on the Beside You In Time DVD. The band omit the ending wah guitar and piano, ending the song once the last chorus finishes.
Live
"You Know What You Are?" became a staple of Nine Inch Nails' With Teeth-era live performances. The song, when performed live, sounds very similar to the album version. The only significant differences are the improvisational soloing by Aaron North during the bridge and the more sudden ending, exemplified on Beside You In Time.
Lyrics
I tried to sneak myself through I tried to get to the other side I tried to patch up the cracks and the holes that I have to hide For a little bit of time even made it work okay Just long enough to really make it hurt When they figured me out and it all just rotted away Don't you fucking know what you are? Go on get back to where you belong You better take a good look because I'm full of shit With every bit of my heart I have tried to believe in it You can dress it all up you can try to pretend But you can't change anything You can't change anything in the end Don't you fucking know what you are? Go on get back to where you belong Remember where you came from remember what you are
Additional lyrics printed in the With Teeth PDF booklet, but not appearing in the song itself
Not one of them you belong with You're only fooling yourself Go on get back to where you belong You are not one of them You belong with us you're only fooling yourself Come back where you belong back To nowhere back to nothing Back to that lonely place inside your head Come back to where you belong You're so fucking stupid and pathetic What you're trying to do We will never let you go That was a lie you must have wanted to believe You didn't really believe that did you? Well it runs too deep it runs too deep my friend Better start to look at things through different eyes Don't you fucking know what you are? Go on get back get back get back to where you belong
