In the spirit of Halloween, Robin Finck appeared on stage wearing a Leatherface mask for the first few songs of the concert. Trent Reznor and the rest of the band were also highly energetic during the show. Some of this energy may have resulted from the technical difficulties the band was experiencing on stage. Trent appeared to be very pissed about his guitar, stage effects, and sound during the concert. In the opening moments of "Echoplex", when Josh Freese tried to activate the LCD touch screen drum machine, it failed, and the beat had to be activated by soundboard. Trent later commented on this and the absence of one of his crew members during an extended talk with the crowd, during which he also introduced the band, before performing "The Good Soldier." Here is Trent's speech in full:
“Thank you very much for spending Halloween here with us. It’s almost becoming a tradition. Thank you. So we normally don’t say too much on stage, but I’ll share something that’s on my mind. We have one of our crew guys who went missing today. I’m not lying. This is not a joke. He’s the guy in charge of tech with the screens. So we don’t – no one knows where he went, and we’re kind of winging it, hoping everything works, and [there are] a lot of things fucking up tonight, but our main concern is that we find this guy, [be]cause he’s our friend. So that’s on my mind, and then somebody, some, uh – let me think of how to put this. When we played "Echoplex", we had some trickery going on up here, and some cocksucker out there has a little laser pointer and decided to fuck us up tonight. Now, the old me – a few years ago – I would’ve said someone punch the motherfucker in the face or send him up here and I’ll punch the shit out of him. But see, that was then. Now I’m just gonna calmly let it go. But if anybody does see someone with a laser pointer, I can’t be responsible for what might happen or should happen to the motherfucker who was shining it at the screen. Meanwhile, we’ve got family here. I’m swearing, I’m sorry. I’d like to introduce my excellent band and friends.”
He then went on to introduce the band and introduced Justin Meldal-Johnsen as Justin “Noble” Johnsen.
