Versions
1 Ghosts I
The song begins with a simple piano melody before a medium-pitched droning synth is added in. A higher synth tone later joins in, playing a basic slow melody of sorts. All elements except the piano later drop out, as a lower drone provides a segue into "2 Ghosts I."
1 Ghosts I (Extended)
An extended version of the song appears on the feature documentary about Dave Navarro's mother and him dealing with the aftermath of her murder (titled Mourning Son). The score is by sometime NIN engineer Michael Tuller (formerly known as Blumpy).
Live
"1 Ghosts I" made its debut on the dress rehearsal show of Lights In The Sky Tour, and was played twelve times on that tour, becoming more infrequent as the tour went on.
Differences In Artwork
It should be noted that much of the artwork embedded in the files of the official download of Ghosts I–IV from nin.com are not just cropped versions of the photographs in the PDF. In this case, the two photographs are completely different.
