Mariqueen Maandig Reznor
Mariqueen Maandig Reznor (née Maandig, born April 5, 1981, in the Phillipines) is a member of How To Destroy Angels, providing lead vocals, lyrics, Swarmatron and other instruments.
Biography
Maandig was born in the Phillipines and moved to Orange County, California, with her family as a young child. Her first foray into music came in her early teens, when a friend played the soundtrack to the musical Miss Saigon for her. She was so impressed that she went out and bought a copy, learned the songs and modeled her vocal style on it. In high school she tried her hand at musical theater, hoping to eventually become a Broadway singer, but decided that it wasn't for her. After high school, Maandig went to fashion school to pursue a career as a personal shopper or stylist but dropped out after feeling jaded about it. She then fell back on pursuing a singing career and used the opportunity to help her overcome her stage fright. [1]
In 2003, a friend suggested that Maandig audition for a band that was looking for a female vocalist. She ultimately got the role of backing vocalist in West Indian Girl, a psychedelic indie-rock band. Her creative input in the band was minimal, but she became a face associated with the band. In the fall of 2008 she accepted an offer from Playboy magazine to be featured as the "Becoming Attraction" for the January 2009 issue. The feature helped to create some buzz around both her and the band. Maandig left West Indian Girl in the summer of 2009 to pursue her own career and do something where she would have more creative input.
In February of 2010, Maandig went into the studio with Nine Inch Nails founder Trent Reznor and his longtime collaborator Atticus Ross to begin recording songs for a new music project, How To Destroy Angels, and over the next few months recorded the songs that formed their self-titled debut EP, How To Destroy Angels. Since then, the band have released a cover of Bryan Ferry's "Is Your Love Strong Enough?" for 2011's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Soundtrack and their second EP, An Omen EP and first album, Welcome Oblivion.
Maandig has made guest appearances with Nine Inch Nails on the NIN 2013-2014 and Cold And Black And Infinite tours, performing How To Destroy Angels material. She later made guest appearances on the tracks "She's Gone Away" and "Shit Mirror". In 2017, she appeared as part of Nine Inch Nails (in this case consisting of Trent Reznor, Robin Finck, Maandig, Atticus Ross, Alessandro Cortini and Joey Castillo of Queens Of The Stone Age) in an episode of the reboot of Twin Peaks. Maandig appeared with Reznor and Ross on a cover of David Bowie's "Fashion" for A Bowie Celebration: Just For One Day! in 2021.
Maandig, along with her husband, currently resides in Beverly Hills, California with their children and dogs.
