This is the second soundtrack that Reznor and Ross have worked on together, preceded by ''[[The Social Network Soundtrack]]'' and followed by the ''[[Gone Girl Soundtrack]]'', also for David Fincher. Its release number is [[Halo numbers|Null 02]], in keeping with [[The Null Corporation]]'s numbering system.

Earlier that day, "[[Immigrant Song]]" premiered on KROQ radio, and was made available as a download to anyone who purchased the iTunes preorder of the album. In addition, the iTunes preorder was accompanied with an extended 8 minute trailer for the film, scored specially by Reznor and Ross. The digital album was made available on December 9th, and the CD on December 27th.

The soundtrack was originally confirmed on January 7, 2011, on a ''New York Times'' panel interview with Reznor. A teaser trailer for the film was later released online on June 2nd (previously being attached to certain domestic and international films), featuring a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song", by Reznor, Ross and [[wp:Karen O|Karen O]] (from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs).
