Where Is Everybody?
This is the original album version. Beginning immediately with a thumping drum beat and distorted bassline doubled by synthesizers, Trent Reznor delivers the first verse rapidly yet melodically, harkening back to his lyrical delivery on "Down In It." The verse features funky, bending guitar licks, likely played using the piezo setting on a Parker Fly. The chorus features a guitar riff as well as rhythm changes for the vocal tracks, which are layered to form harmonies. After the second chorus, a wall of guitars enters, backed by more synthesizers, which eventually give way to Adrian Belew's reversed guitar soloing. This ending crossfades with a brief, quiet, dark and distant instrumental coda, which segues into "The Mark Has Been Made."
