Versions
Complication
This is the original album version. Its descending, filtered guitar introduction begins immediately as "Starfuckers, Inc." ends, and is augmented by a drum loop before opening up into the main body of the song, characterised by a catchy bassline, Trent Reznor's wordless background vocals, and a guitar solo. The final section of the song seems to be a noise loop made by guitars, which also incorporates a panning wind sound that bears a very strong similarity to the wind sound that runs through "Hurt". The track then crossfades with either "I'm Looking Forward To Joining You, Finally" (CD) or "The New Flesh" (vinyl).
Complication (Alternate Version)
Running Time: 2:55
Released on The Fragile: Deviations 1. Also known as "Complication" (Alt) when it was originally released on Apple Music as part of The Fragile Instrumental. Same as the album version, but with an extended ending.
Complications Of The Flesh
Running Time: 6:38
Danny Lohner created this mashup of "Complication" and "The New Flesh." It appears exclusively on Part 3 of the We're In This Together single.
Complication (And All That Could Have Been)
This live version appears only on the DVD and VHS releases of And All That Could Have Been.
Live
"Complication" made its live debut on April 3, 2000. The Fragility 2.0 tour was the only time this song was performed, but it was played at every show. Three large screens were dropped down behind the band, showing lights and shapes that seemed to respond to the music.
