105th Airborne Crusaders
A military unit formed in the fictional world of Year Zero. The unit seems to have formed after the bio-terrorism attack in Los Angeles that is described in the Hollywood in Memoriam website. Members of the unit seem to all share a deep belief in Christianity, and use their faith as motivation in the war.
10 Miles High
A NIN song that initially appeared on the vinyl edition of The Fragile. Versions of this track can be found in the UK version of We're In This Together and Things Falling Apart.

A telephone number from the Year Zero promotion. When the number is called, it plays back an audio recording of case number 71839j from U.S. Wiretap website. The recording is of a female whom gets trapped in a nightclub when a person infected with Red Horse comes in.

A telephone number from the Year Zero promotion. Upon calling the number, a recording is played of a newsreader, a man making comments on the events explained by the newsreader, and a clip of Survivalism.

A telephone number from the Year Zero promotion. This phone number is found on a sticker on the back of the Year Zero album. The number leads to a recording from the Bureau of Morality telling the caller that by purchasing the album, they have been flagged as Anti-American.

A Perfect Circle

Andrea Mulrain. She was "a college sweetheart/ heartbreak situation" of Trent's. Her name appears in The Becoming and is the only name of a person to ever appear in a NIN song.

A recording from the fictional world of Year Zero. It is about a man (presumed to be Angry_Sniper) who sets off bombs of Silver Nitrate in Wrigley Field, and shoots and kills someone.
Baseball in February
In BallgameOver.mp3, the character mentions that the baseball game is in February. This has significance because currently, professional baseball games usually not held in that month.
Bauhaus
A rock band whom opened for Nine Inch Nails during their Summer Amphitheatre Tour. Lead Singer Peter Murphy collaborated with Trent Reznor for several special radio appearances. See the Wikipedia entry of Bauhaus for more details.

Also known as Halo 12. Closure has been released officially as two VHS tapes with NIN tour footage from the Self-Destruct Tour and NIN music videos. An "unoffical" DVD version was "leaked" via BitTorrent in late December of 2006.

A music festival in Indio, CA. NIN played the festival on May 1, 2005.

Consolidated Mail Systems
Website created for the fictional world of Year Zero.
Copper
In the fictional world of Year Zero, copper is used in the vaccine to prevent infection by the Red Horse virus.

Danny Lohner
Former NIN member whom has played bass, guitar, and synthesizer. Danny has also played for A Perfect Circle, Tapeworm, Killing Joke, Methods of Mayhem, Skrew, and Angkor Wat. Due to the Trent's relationship with Marilyn Manson, Danny had also played acoustic guitar on the track "The Reflecting God" from the Antichrist Superstar album.
Darren Kroupa
A NIN fan whom died on April 1, 2007. It is understood that Darren met Trent via The Francis Foundation. He was allowed to visit with NIN during the production of the Year Zero album, where this photo was taken. Darren was eventually incorporated into the fictional Year Zero world on the website Secure Broadcast Informatics.
Dave Grohl
Former drummer of Nirvana and creater and current front man of Foo Fighters. He contributed as a drummer on some of the tracks on the With Teeth album.
Dave “Rave” Ogilvie
A producer and musician whom has collaborated with not only NIN, but other bands. Dave has been know to also collaborate with 54-40, David Bowie, Jakalope, Marilyn Manson, Skinny Puppy, and Tool
David Bowie
A famous musician whom Trent Reznor was not only influenced by, but has worked with on many occasions.
Dead Souls
A Joy Division cover recorded for The Crow Soundtrack. It was later added as the fifth track on Disk 2 of The Downward Spiral "Deluxe Edition".
Deep
The second track off of the Lara Croft:Tomb Raider Soundtrack performed by NIN. This track currently does not appear on any Halos.
Denise Milfort
The singer of the track La Mer from the album, The Fragile.
Der Kommissar
A Falco cover sang by Trent when he was with Option 30.
Dig It
The Skinny Puppy song that supposedly inspired "Down In It".
Dissonance
The name given to NIN's set when playing during the Outside Tour with David Bowie in 1995.

- Album - Also known as Halo 1
- Song - The third track off of Pretty Hate Machine. Versions of this track also appear on Down In It, Head Like A Hole, Closure, and Purest Feeling.

EL-P
Also known as El-Producto. An artist whose remix of Nine Inch Nails' Only appeared on the Every Day Is Exactly The Same single. El-P and Trent Reznor also collaborated on a song entitled Flyentology, which can be found on El-P's March 2007 release, I'll Sleep When You're Dead.
ETS
Short for Echoing The Sound.
Echoing The Sound
A predominant fan-run internet forum for discussions about Nothing Records artists, most prominently Nine Inch Nails. The site name is taken from the lyrics from the NIN song, "Please".
Elliot R Carraig
A character from the fictional world of Year Zero. Elliot is first mentioned on the Exterminal website as a member of a resistance group called, The Spiders.
Eraser
The eleventh track off of The Downward Spiral. Versions of this track can also be found on Further Down The Spiral, Closure, and Beside You In Time.
Even Deeper
The eighth track from the Left Disk of The Fragile. Currently, no other versions of this track appear on any other Halos.
Every Day Is Exactly The Same
- Album - Also known as Halo 21.
- Song - The sixth track off of With Teeth. Versions of this track can also be found on Every Day Is Exactly The Same.
Exhibit 24
A website created for the fictional world of Year Zero. The website is dossier of evidence against a classified individual, who is speculated to be Trent Reznor. In addition, the site lists usernames of members from both Spiral and Echoing The Sound as a part of The Resistance Network.
Exterminal
A website created for the fictional world of Year Zero. It is a database of the inmates in Extrajudiciary Federal Detainment Camp in Guam. Included are many references to the actions various individuals and groups, providing a broader understanding of how people are fighting for their freedoms in Year Zero.

A band formed by former NIN guitarist, Richard Patrick. You can read more about this band on their Wikipedia entry.
Fist Fuck
The fifth track on the album, Fixed. This track is a remix of the song, Wish.
Fixed
Also known as Halo 6. This album is comprised of remixes of the songs from the album Broken.
Flyentology
A track by EL-P that Trent Reznor has collaborated on. It is the tenth track on the album, I'll Sleep When You're Dead.
Fragility
The name given to the tour in 1999-2000 that was in support of the album The Fragile. The first leg was called Fragility v1.0 and took place in Europe, Japan, and Australia. The second leg was called Fragility v2.0 and took place in North America and European festivals. From the Fragility v2.0 leg of the tours, the CD/DVD, And All That Could Have Been was made.
Fragility v1.0
The name given to the first leg of the Fragility tour. This leg took place between November 1999 to February 2000 in Europe, Japan, and Australia. See the Fragility article for more details.
Fragility v2.0
The name given to the second leg of the Fragility tour. This leg took place between April 2000 to July 2000 in North America and European festivals. Footage from this leg of the tour was later used to create the CD/DVD, And All That Could Have Been.
Free Rebel Art
A website created for the fictional world of Year Zero. The website is akin to the Art Is Resistance website in that it preaches non-violent resistance. However, further research of the website reveals more.

Also known as Halo 10. This album contains mostly remixes of the tracks from The Downward Spiral.

Get Down, Make Love
The third track off of Sin. This track is a cover of the Queen song from the album News of The World.
Getting Smaller
The ninth track off of With Teeth. This track features Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters (and formerly Nirvana). Currently, the only version of this track is featured on With Teeth.
God Given
The tenth track off of Year Zero. Currently, the only version of this track is on Year Zero.
Gone, Still
The fifth track off of Still. This track is an instrumental. Currently, the only version of this track is on Still.
Grace The Teacher
A website created for the fictional world of Year Zero. The website features the journal of the fictional character, Jeremiah Snow.

Halo
This is the official numbering system of NIN albums. While there is plenty of speculation, there is no official statement of why the word "Halo" is used for this purpose.

Jeordie White
Best known by his stage name, Twiggy Ramirez, when working with Marilyn Manson, Jordie joined NIN during the 2005 With Teeth tour. He plays both bass and guitar during live performaces, and has contributed to studio work. In addition to his musical abilities, he also co-stars with fellow NIN band mate, Aaron North in the webcomic, Squires Of Dimness.
Jerome Dillon
A former drummer for NIN. He left the band in 2005 due to "health issues".
JLYI
Abbreviation for "Just Like You Imagined".
John A. Malm, Jr.
Trent Reznor's former manager and co-founder of Nothing Records. He was involved in a legal clash with Trent in 2005, which ended with him paying Trent $2.95 million.
John Ferminger
A fictional character from the world of Year Zero. Mentioned in the website The Water Turned To Blood, John later took on the name of "John of Boston" after being in a traffic accident when water turned to blood under the bridge he was traveling on.
John Lennon
Solo artist and former member of the band, The Beatles. Trent Reznor is in possession of his old mellotron, and has used it while recording tracks for NIN and Marilyn Manson.
Josh Freese
A drummer for NIN. He is a session musician with a prolific career.
Josh Homme
Founder and frontman for the band, Queens Of The Stone Age. You can read more on the Josh Homme Wikipedia entry.
Judson Ogram Correctional Facility
A correctional facility from the fictional world of Year Zero. This place is mentioned in from the website The Water Turned To Blood and is where "John of Boston" is being kept.

Live: With Teeth
The name given to the NIN tour in following the release of the album With Teeth. The tour started in March of 2005 and ended October of 2006.
Lost Fragile Tracks
The label of a CD in a picture on nin.com, speculated to contain unreleased tracks from The Fragile recordings.
Lost Highway Soundtrack
The soundtrack for the David Lynch film, Lost Highway. The soundtrack was produced by Trent Reznor and features some tracks by him, as well as the NIN track, The Perfect Drug.
Love Is Not Enough

The Mailstrom
A website created for the fictional world of Year Zero. The Mailstrom is a server-hopping program designed to catch catches emails as they are transmitted to the Consolidated Mail Systems, a government controlled central e-mail server for all e-mail content on the internet. This helps provide insight into the lives of people living in world of year zero.
March of The Pigs
- Album: Also known as Halo 7. This album was released as a teaser single prior to the album The Downward Spiral.
- Song: The fourth track from the album The Downward Spiral. Versions of this track appear on March of The Pigs, Closure, And All That Could Have Been, and Beside You In Time.
Marilyn Manson
Both the stage name of Brian Warner and the band he leads. Trent has worked with both the man and the band since their signing with Nothing Records in 1993.
Me, I'm Not
The sixth track off of Year Zero. This track was originally "leaked" for the promotion of Year Zero. There are no other versions of this track currently.
The Meathead Perspective
Started in 1999 by a NIN fan known as Meathead, the site looks at the goings-on with all things NIN and adds a humorous twist.
Meet Your Master
The eleventh track off of Year Zero. There are no other versions of this track currently.
Message To No One
For the album, Year Zero, a PDF file was posted on the NIN website with lyrics to several songs. This is one of the songs on that file, but is not on Year Zero.

My Violent Heart
The eighth track off of Year Zero. This track was originally "leaked" as part of the Year Zero promotion. The "leaked" version had the ending, which when played through a linear spectrometer, revealed The Presence. On the Year Zero album, however, that ending is on the track, The Warning. There are currently no other versions of this track.

Founder of Open Source Resistance, Neil is a nonviolent activist and an important person in the world of Year Zero.
Nerochip
An item from the fictional world of Year Zero. This item is a tiny red device, initially implanted in the right wrist of all convicts of violent crimes, which traces the whereabouts of the person who carries it.
Nine Inch Nails
The studio name for Trent Reznor, as well as the name of the band hired by him to perform songs while on tour.
Ninternet
Websites that are a part of the NIN community. The name is obviously derrived from the abbreviation "NIN" and word, "internet". See Ninternet for these sites.

An audio track file from the fictional world of Year Zero. The file was found on the Another Version of The Truth website. It is about a son of an Imam who is killed by a SWAT team looking for a Muslim extremist.
Non-Entity
A track created by Trent Reznor for ReAct Now: Music & Relief; a relief program for victims of Hurricane Katrina. A version of this track can be found on Beside You In Time.
Not So Pretty Now
A track originally from the With Teeth outtakes. There is currently no commercial release of this track, although it has been played during Live: With Teeth tour.
Nothing can stop me now
Reoccuring lyrics in a few NIN tracks. These lyrics can be found in the versions of Piggy, Ruiner, Big Man With A Gun, La Mer, and Sunspots.
Nottingham flyer
At the Nottingham concert, fliers were found which at first seemed to contain hidden text possibly relating to the world of Year Zero.
Now I'm Nothing
A track that was written for, and used as an introduction track to NIN's set during the Lollapalooza tour in 1991. It was usually followed by "Terrible Lie," and was never recorded in the studio nor officially released. A live video of it can, however, be found on the DVD release of Closure and certain bootlegs.

One Country At A Time
A website created for the fictional world of Year Zero. The website jumps between the narrative of teenager and a comic strip of soldiers in Syria.

- Album: Also known as Halo 20. The first single released after With Teeth.

Opal
A substance from the fictional world of Year Zero. Due to global warming, the coca leaves used to make cocaine rot too quickly to use. Opal has taken the place of the dwindling cocaine supply.
Opalescent Haze
A website that appeared a few days prior to the release of Year Zero. The site was originally thought to be one of the Year Zero websites, but was quickly revealed to be a fake.
Opalo.mp3
One of the files found on the Another Version Of The Truth website. It is an audio file with a short report about the DEA battle with a Columbian drug cartel.
Open Source Resistance
A website created as part of the Year Zero experience, but not set in the fiction world of Year Zero. The website encourages people to submit works that will help awareness of the issues which could lead to a world like that in Year Zero.
Operation Chip Sweep
A website created for the fictional world of Year Zero. The website seems to be a part of some kind of news organization, and talks about the Nerochip in Great Briton.
Operation Swamp 0000
A website created for the fictional world of Year Zero. This site appears to have been constructed by one of the "chip-pullers" mentioned on Operation Chip Sweep. It contains detailed instructions, complete with photographs, on safe removal of a nerochip from one's own body.
OSR
Short for Open Source Resistance.

Parepin
A drug from the fictional world of Year Zero. This drug is put into the water supply in the United States to help combat biological terrorism. Although, opponents of the drug claim that its use is to change serotonin and dopamine levels to keep the population sedated and easy to manipulate.
Peaches
The stage name for Merrill Beth Nisker. She is the front of the band Peaches and (the) Herm, whom opened for NIN during the second half of their summer 2006 U.S. tour.
The Perfect Drug
- Album: Also known as Halo 11. This album only contains the remixed to The Perfect Drug.
- Song: The third track off of the Lost Highway Soundtrack. Versions of this track appear on The Perfect Drug.
Peter Murphy
The lead singer for the band Bauhaus.
Philomela
A character from the fictional world of Year Zero. She is a member of the Another Version Of The Truth Forums. She claims to be partially responsible for the death of a local man that was reported in the papers.
Physical (You're So)
A hidden track off of the Broken album. It is a remake of the Adam Ant song from his album Kings of The Wild Frontier.
Piggy
The second track off of The Downward Spiral. Versions of this track appear on Further Down The Spiral and And All That Could Have Been.
Piggy (Nothing Can Stop Me Now)
The first track off of Further Down The Spiral. This track is a remix of Piggy.
Pilgrimage
The ninth track on the left disc of The Fragile. There are currently no other versions of this track.
Pilgrims
A group from the fictional world of Year Zero. The goal of the group is to send information back in time to the year 2007 in order to stop the world of Year Zero from happening.
Pinion
The first track off of Broken. There are no other versions of this track, however there is a video which is on the Closure release.
PHM
Short for Pretty Hate Machine.
Please
The fifth track on the right disc of The Fragile. There are no other versions of this track currently, however, on the cassette version of The Fragile, the track has an extra section.
Pretty Hate Machine
Also known as Halo 2. This was the first official full-length album released by NIN.
Purest Feeling
The "unofficial" first album by NIN. This album was recorded as a demo, but was later released by Hawk Records following the success of The Downward Spiral. Most of the tracks from this album were later re-recorded to make Pretty Hate Machine.

Queens Of The Stone Age
A band whom opened for NIN during the autumn leg of the With Teeth arena tour. Reznor has provided guest vocals for QOTSA's 2007 record, Era Vulgaris.
R
Red Horse
A virus in the fictional world of Year Zero. Victims of this virus are prone to homicidal psychosis and massive hemorrhaging from lachrymal ducts, ears anus, and urethra. The virus is highly contagious and may spread via airborne means. The mortality rate is 100% within 48 hours. See Redhorsevector.net for more details.
Red Horse Vector
A website created for the fictional world of Year Zero. This website talks about the Red Horse virus, an Ebola like virus which is less likely to fail due to climate conditions. There's information on symptoms, development, and also the development of a vaccine. It's also revealed through a video that this was the virus used to kill Jed Mather, the American diplomat, in Algeria.
Red pills
The nickname given to a type of drug in the fictional world of Year Zero. The pills are suppose to be given to soldiers to to reintroduce the aggression killed by Parepin.
Reptile
The twelfth track off of The Downward Spiral. Versions of this track appear on March of The Pigs and the And All That Could Have Been DVD.
